About product

Artwox Model IJN Yamato in 1:350 scale: a wooden deck

An accessory from Artwox Model for the plastic kit of the Japanese battleship Yamato. It is not a kit or a finished model. It is a thin wood veneer with pre-printed plank laying and an adhesive backing that is glued straight onto the deck of the kit. The deck is cut for the Tamiya 78014 kit.

Preparing the plastic is decisive

Nine out of ten wooden decks that go wrong have one cause in common: a badly prepared base. Veneer is thin and faithfully follows everything underneath it. Before you start, cut and sand away all the remains of the sprue gates, level the differences where the hull parts join and fill any gaps. Then go over the surface with fine paper and finally degrease it; cotton wool with alcohol is enough. Remove the dust left after sanding with adhesive tape rather than by blowing, or you will only drive it into the corners.

Gluing step by step

Lay the veneer on dry first and check that the cutouts fit the feet of the superstructure and the hatches. Then take the protective film off only partly, lay the center down and work toward the bow and the stern. Press it down with a flat tool through paper. Where trimming is needed, use a fresh blade and make several light strokes instead of one heavy one, as a blunt knife tears the grain.

Finishing

The veneer does not have to be painted, but it is worth treating. A thin coat of matte varnish protects it during the rest of the build and unifies the sheen. A very thinned dark wash brings out the plank laying. A grayish filter will tone down a wood shade that is too yellow, but always try it on an offcut first.

Who the deck is for

  • Builders of ship models in 1:350 scale
  • Modelers who dislike engraved planks molded into plastic
  • Those building exactly the Tamiya 78014 kit
  • Beginners willing to work slowly and carefully

This is an accessory for a plastic kit. The model, paints and glue are not included in the package.

FAQ

No. The veneer already has the shade and the grain of wood. We recommend only a thin matte varnish as protection and possibly a thinned wash in the seams between the planks.

The adhesive layer grips at once and can only be corrected in the first few seconds. That is why you should always lay the veneer on dry first and take the protective film off in sections.

No. Different releases have the deck laid out differently. The set is cut for one specific kit, so please check the match.
