A photo-etched accessory in 1:350 scale from the line of detail parts by the Japanese manufacturer Fujimi. According to the name these are external runs, that is, the routes of cables and conduits led along the outside of the hull and the superstructures. On real ships they form thin but clearly visible lines, which a plastic kit either does not have at all or has only suggested. Photo-etched metal can render these features in a matching thickness and gives a model scale depth. The set is an accessory for a plastic kit and is not a model itself.
Warships of the Imperial Japanese Navy had extensive runs led along the surface of the structure, because routing them inside armored spaces divided by bulkheads was difficult and hard to repair when damaged. In period photographs these lines form a characteristic network along the sides of the superstructures, the funnels and the masts. For a modeler they are details that decide whether a model comes across as a toy or as a scaled-down ship.
Detail sets of this kind replace coarsely shaped plastic features with finer parts, so you work with small components and it is good to proceed in sections. Separate the photo-etched parts on a hard support with a sharp knife or special nippers, fold them in a bending tool or between two razor blades and glue them with a super glue with an extended setting time, or spot-glue them with a gel-consistency glue. Degrease the metal before painting and give it a primer coat, otherwise the paint flakes off. Fit the set as the model goes along, not onto a finished hull: a number of parts are accessible only before the deck and the superstructures are closed up.
The accessory is supplied unassembled and unpainted. The base model, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
