This item is not a ship kit. It is a set in which you get a veneer deck with pre-printed plank laying and a self-adhesive backing, and a sheet of painting masks with it. The veneer goes straight onto the plastic deck of the kit and takes over from the engraved plastic relief with the real grain of wood. The set is cut for one particular kit, Very Fire VF350003; check before buying that this is the one you have.
Degrease the plastic deck thoroughly first with alcohol or detergent and let it dry out completely. Traces of mold release agent are the commonest reason why veneer lifts a corner after a few weeks. Level the flash from molding with fine sanding paper, because every unevenness shows under thin veneer. Peel the film off the self-adhesive backing in sections, never all at once. Lay the deck on dry first, line it up along the longitudinal axis and work from the middle out to the edges, so that any deviation is split between both sides and does not add up at one end.
The veneer works as soon as it is glued, but the shade can still be shifted. A weak stain applied with a brush evens the color out and brings out the plank pattern. A thin coat of matte acrylic varnish protects the surface and holds the sheen down. A fine wash or a thinly diluted dark paint run between the planks creates the seams and the deck gains depth at once. Always try it first on an offcut of veneer left over after trimming, not straight on the glued deck.
