A set of photo-etched parts in thin stainless steel sheet from the Czech manufacturer Eduard, intended for detailing a model of the destroyer USS Zumwalt in 1:350 scale. It is not a kit of the ship. The package holds frets with etched parts that replace or supplement the coarser plastic parts of the base model. Photo-etching can capture a thickness that injected plastic will never come close to: railings, mesh screens, ladders and fine structural elements finally have a realistic material thickness at this scale.
USS Zumwalt (DDG-1000) is the lead unit of the class of the same name of guided missile destroyers of the US Navy. Characteristic features are the inward-sloping tumblehome hull and the smooth composite superstructure, which are meant to reduce radar reflection markedly. The silhouette of the ship looks more like a floating monolith than a classic warship, and it is precisely this smoothness that makes a particular demand on a model: the cleaner the surfaces, the more every fine detail stands out on them. The ship was commissioned in 2016.
Cut the parts off with a sharp scalpel on a hard surface and never break them out with your fingers. Make the bends in a photo-etch bending tool or between two blades, so that the edge is sharp and straight. They are bonded with super glue applied in a minimal amount, ideally with a pin from a drop on a tile. Stainless steel holds paint only on a prepared base, so degrease the frets before building and spray them with a primer. Paint railings and mesh screens only once they are in place on the model, so that no bare cuts are left. A final matte varnish unifies the smooth surfaces of the superstructure and erases the difference between metal and plastic.
This is an accessory set, not a kit. The base model of the ship, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
