About product

A 1:350 USS Missouri BB-63 wooden deck (Artwox Model)

An accessory for modelers who are building an Iowa class battleship in her state from the early 1990s. The package contains a wood veneer shaped and cut to the deck surfaces of the plastic kit, with an adhesive backing and pre-printed plank laying. The model thereby gains a material depth that a coat of paint on engraved plastic cannot reach: wood has a grain of its own and reflects light differently at every viewing angle.

Why on this ship in particular

Iowa class battleships have exceptionally large continuous deck areas, so the deck makes up a substantial part of the visible surface of the finished model. It is here that the difference between sprayed plastic and real veneer shows most. The 1990s version of the ship also differs from her wartime state in the placing of the superstructure and the equipment, which is why the deck is cut for one specific kit, the Tamiya 78029; check before you buy that this is the one you have.

Laying large areas

With large pieces it pays to work methodically. Expose the film on the adhesive layer only along a strip two or three centimeters wide, settle the piece along the centerline of the ship and work from the middle toward the bow and the stern, pressing the veneer down as you go with a flat squeegee or the ball of your thumb. Do not fold the piece around the barbettes, the hatches and the bases of the superstructure, but free it gradually by trimming. If a bubble forms, pierce it with the tip of a scalpel and press the surface down again; the repair is almost invisible, because the hole falls into a groove between the planks.

Who the accessory is for

  • builders of large battleships in 1:350 scale
  • modelers who want to lift a standard plastic kit to a display piece
  • those interested in combining a wooden deck with photo-etched railings and nets
  • those who want to save themselves laborious masking and lining of deck planks by hand

This is a separately sold accessory. The kit, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

The deck corresponds to the modernized form of the ship from the early 1990s, which differs from her wartime state in the placing of the equipment. That is why it fits the Tamiya 78029 kit.

It is not necessary, as the veneer is opaque. It is recommended, though, to sand and degrease the plastic so that the adhesive holds.

It takes fine washes and pigments, but aggressive thinners and long soaking do it no good. It is safer to work dry or to seal the wood with matte varnish in advance.
