A photo-etched accessory set from the Czech manufacturer Eduard for a model of the American aircraft carrier USS Nimitz in 1:350 scale. This set is the seventh part of the numbered series that Eduard has issued for the vessel one after another. The parts of thin photo-etched sheet metal are fitted onto a built plastic model and add a fineness to it that cannot be reached in injection-molded plastic, because a plastic part has to have a considerably greater thickness on account of the mold.
USS Nimitz (CVN-68) is the first unit of the Nimitz class, that is of the large American nuclear-powered aircraft carriers. It entered service in the middle of the nineteen seventies. For a modeler what is typical is the angled flight deck, the island by the starboard side, the deck elevators and the enormous number of small elements around the edge of the deck and on the superstructure. It is precisely these that decide whether a model has a believable effect.
Separate the parts of photo-etched sheet metal with a scalpel against a hard surface, so that the edge stays clean. For the bends use a bender or two razor blades, and hold the fine parts with tweezers with smooth jaws, so that no grooves are left on the surface. They are glued with cyanoacrylate glue applied in a really small amount, as an excess is hard to remove and floods the detail. Degrease the sheet metal before painting and spray a primer on. Fit delicate elements such as the railings right at the very end, so that they are not bent during further work.
