About product

USS Texas BB-35 1:350 (Trumpeter)

Injection-molded plastic kit of the American battleship USS Texas (BB-35) in 1:350 scale from Trumpeter. The model is built with a full hull, which is split into two parts and fitted with internal braces so that it holds its shape. Besides the plastic you will find photo-etched parts including railings, an anchor chain, a pair of shipboard floatplanes OS2U Kingfisher, boats, a crane, decals (flags, hull numbers, deck markings, the national insignia for the aircraft) and a stand with a nameplate. The finished model is roughly 50 cm long - 1:350 may be the standard ship scale, but a battleship is so large that even so the result is a model almost half a meter long.

The real subject

USS Texas was a dreadnought launched before the First World War. She went through both world wars and a series of upgrades - in the Second World War she gave fire support to the landings in North Africa, in Normandy and in the Pacific, and she carried catapult-launched OS2U Kingfisher floatplanes for spotting. Today she is a museum ship in Texas and is among the last surviving dreadnoughts in the world - for a modeler it is a rare chance to build a ship that can actually be gone to see.

Building and painting tips

A ship model is a different discipline from an aircraft: the main work lies in the superstructure, the armament, the railings and the rigging, and there is an enormous number of small parts. Glue the hull and let it cure properly, and only then add the decks - with full-hull models it pays to spray the underwater part first and mask it before you start on the hull gray. Wooden decks can be shaded nicely with thinned paint and a fine wash in the seams. Glue the photo-etched railings onto finished paint with cyanoacrylate glue; bend them on a metal surface, not in your fingers. The OS2U floatplanes deserve to be sprayed separately, off the ship. Tension the rigging at the end. Keep the weathering restrained - rust streaks only below the hawse pipes and the anchor fittings, otherwise the model quickly loses its sense of scale.

Who the model is for

  • For modelers with experience of building ships and of working with photo-etched parts
  • For collectors of the US Navy and of the battleships of both world wars
  • For those who want a model of a ship that really survives, as a museum piece
  • For a beginner it is a demanding project because of the number of small parts

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

Roughly 50 cm. The 1:350 scale is standard for ships, but a battleship is so large that even so the result is a model almost half a meter long - allow for that when choosing a display case.

Yes, photo-etched parts including railings are part of the box. Modelers who want the maximum of detail often buy specialized aftermarket photo-etched sets on top of that.

The hull is split into two parts and is built as a full hull; a stand with a nameplate is in the box as well. If you want to set the ship into a water surface, you will have to rework the underwater part yourself.

Her Second World War state - the armament and the pair of catapult-launched OS2U Kingfisher floatplanes match it. Texas changed a great deal during her life, so check the particular year of the configuration against the instructions in the box.
