It is a large ship model whose main area is made up of the flight deck and the island superstructure with the funnel, the mast and the radar equipment. It is precisely these parts that decide the final impression, so it is worth giving time to painting and fitting them. The model suits modelers who already have experience with ship kits and want a project lasting several weeks.
Yorktown CV-5 was the first unit of the class of the same name of American aircraft carriers of prewar design. Technically she is characterized by an open hangar deck, a flight deck with elevators, an island on the starboard side with the funnel and light anti-aircraft armament distributed around the edge of the deck. The ship was built as a fast aircraft carrier able to operate a numerous air group.
First settle whether you are building a full-hull model on a stand or a waterline one, because it affects the approach to the hull and to the base. Paint the flight deck separately and away from the hull: the wooden areas are done with glazes of different shades so that the planks do not look uniform, and the deck markings are applied only over a unified surface. It is advisable to assemble and paint the island superstructure separately, including the radar elements, and to fit it at the end. Build the anti-aircraft armament and the boats to one side and mount them after the basic weathering. Photo-etched railings, ladders and a wooden deck make the greatest difference to the appearance, and for ship models in this scale they are sold separately.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
