What to avoid

The most conspicuous mistake is a pattern that is off the vertical. The eye squares a wall up precisely by it, so even a slight twist makes it look as if the whole room had tilted. The second common mistake is a joint run exactly into a corner: there the strips never meet exactly and the gap can be seen from every angle. The third is gloss, because a printed surface reflects light differently from the plaster and the wood around it. And the fourth is the order of work, when the walls are lined in an already furnished room that cannot be reached with a sheet or a ruler.

How to do it better

• Square the pattern up by the vertical edge of the wall, not by the edge of the sheet.
• In a corner it is better to fold the wallpaper over and run the joint a little way from the edge.
• Let the bottom edge overhang below the level of the floor, as a baseboard or floorboards will hide the joint.
• Even the gloss out with a matte varnish, which you try on an offcut first.
• Line the walls before you put the furniture and the figures into the room.
