About product

What the set is for

In the cockpits of American aircraft the walls and parts of the equipment were often covered with a quilted fabric lining that forms a characteristic regular grid of soft panels. On a model this is a detail that is hard to reproduce with a brush: paint alone will not create a raised surface, and engraving the quilting into the plastic is slow work in 1:48 scale. This set solves the whole problem by applying a finished element.

What the set contains

A sheet of colored three-dimensional elements made by 3D printing and printed on backing decal paper. The elements have real thickness as well as finished coloring, so once applied they look like a soft cover rather than like printing. The set is not prepared for one particular model: it is listed as universal, so you choose where the elements go according to your subject and to the manufacturer's instructions.

How the elements are applied

The elements of the QD series slide off the backing decal paper after a short dip. Cut the part out, leave it in lukewarm water for about fifteen seconds and slide it into place. It has no adhesive layer of its own, it holds reliably on gloss varnish of the Future, Klear or Tamiya X-22 type, and in an intricate corner of a cockpit a drop of cyanoacrylate glue helps. Do not use a decal softener or a decal fixer, as the chemicals attack the printed resin.

  • Paint the surface under the element beforehand and let it dry perfectly.
  • Degrease the surface and go over it with gloss varnish, otherwise the element will not hold.
  • Slide the element off the paper into place on the water and check its position.
  • Draw the surplus water off with a soft tool, from the center toward the edges.

Who it is for

The set suits a modeler building an American aircraft with the canopy slid back or the doors open who wants the inside of the cockpit to be convincing even from close up. The package contains only the elements on the sheet; the kit, the paints and the glue are not included, unless stated otherwise.
