The kit captures the GAZ-2308, a ladder-frame all-wheel-drive pickup that came about at the Gorky car plant in the mid-1990s under the name Ataman. 1:43 is the classic car scale, so the finished model suits a cabinet beside collector metal models and beside other commercial vehicles from the same maker.
The Ataman was an attempt to offer the home market a practical working vehicle on the border between an off-road car and a light truck: a cab for the crew, an open bed at the rear and a sturdy ladder-frame construction derived from the works' light trucks. It came about in the mid-1990s and was shown to the public in 1996. It never reached large-scale series production, though - only a small trial batch was built, and that is exactly why the Ataman is today a rewarding and not often modeled subject among collectors. A number of features of the body betray its kinship with the GAZ trucks of the time, with which it shared part of its engineering.
It pays to put the parts together dry first, check the fit of the cab and the bed and only then glue with an adhesive suitable for the material the parts are made of. A primer will even up the surface and help the top coat. Spray the body with an airbrush in thin coats; a gloss shade will then come out well after polishing and after the panel lines are brought out with a dark wash. A prototype vehicle will take a purely cabinet finish with no weathering; anyone who wants it in working trim can add dust to the wheel arches and mud to the tires.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
