The package contains individual burdock plants for dioramas and vignettes in 1:48 scale. The plants are separated from the sheet, the leaves are shaped and the whole is planted into the terrain. The manufacturer is the Czech company Model Scene, which specializes in diorama vegetation. It is not a kit but a scenery accessory. The name gives a range of 1:45 and 1:48, and the plant is usable in both.
Burdock is a robust biennial herb with strikingly large heart-shaped leaves and a tall branching stalk. It is one of the typical ruderal plants – it grows where the soil is disturbed and rich in nitrogen: by walls and fences, on village greens and in yards, around dung heaps, on waste ground, in ditches, by abandoned buildings and along tracks. That is exactly why it is so useful in a diorama: it immediately gives a scene the neglected, lived-in, handled character that grass alone cannot create. The large leaves also bring an element into a scene that reads clearly in terms of scale.
Do not leave the broad leaves flat – bend them along the midrib and ripple the edges slightly, so that they droop downward. Plant burdock at the feet of walls, at the corners of buildings, in ditches and by fences, never in the middle of a maintained lawn. Build a group from plants of different sizes and add lower weeds and grass, so that the transition to the terrain is not abrupt. Glue with cyanoacrylate into a pre-drilled hole; cover the base of the plant with a scatter or soil. A unifying wash can bring a scene into harmony, but go sparingly.
This is a scenery accessory, not a model kit. The glue, the paints, the base and any further material are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
