A pair of resin landing gear wheels with a smooth tire for the Japanese Mitsubishi A6M carrier fighter in 1:48 scale. The casting has the contact patch marked out and fine ribbing on the hub.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Mitsubishi A6M, established among modelers as the Zero, entered the Pacific war as a fighter with unusually long range and agility. The designer Jiro Horikoshi pursued that goal by consistently lightening the airframe, which later showed in how little punishment the machine could take in combat. On a number of production batches the landing gear wheels carried tires with no tread pattern, smooth all the way round.
The replacement wheels are cast in resin and have the flattening at the point of contact with the ground suggested, so that once fitted the model does not look as if it were hovering above the surface. The hub carries fine ribbing and a separate boss, and the sidewalls of the tire have a crisp bead and legible relief.
The castings are separated from the casting block with a saw or the cut of a sharp knife; the remains of the block are usually under the contact patch, so any trace of the cut disappears where the wheel meets the ground. The tire looks good in a dark gray with a touch of brown, and the hub is set apart in a lighter shade according to the production batch. Check the smooth tread against a photograph of the particular machine, because tires with a tread pattern also appeared on this type.
The landing gear is one of the places everyone notices on a finished model, because the viewer has it at eye level. Changing the wheels is therefore one of the modifications with the greatest visible effect for the least work.
