A masking set from MH models in 1:48 scale for a model of the Japanese Mitsubishi A6M2 carrier fighter. The set is aimed at the recognition stripes and at further elements of the markings, which are sprayed in paint with the templates instead of being applied as decals. It is not a kit or a set of accessory parts. It is precisely on stripes across the tail surfaces and the fuselage that spraying is an advantage: a decal lies down badly over edges and transitions and tends to wrinkle, whereas a sprayed stripe follows the shape of the airframe exactly.
The A6M2 was the basic version of the Japanese carrier fighter with a radial Nakajima Sakae engine. It excelled in range, rate of climb and agility, which were achieved by a very light structure. The Type 21 version with folding wingtips was adapted to operation from aircraft carriers and belongs among the most frequently modeled Japanese types of all. The characteristic colored stripes on the tail surfaces and the fuselage served to tell machines and units apart quickly.
Finish the model in its base coat and let it cure. Lay the template in place and press it down all round the outline; on stripes across curved surfaces work from the center toward the edges. Cover the surroundings with tape and paper. Spray the paint in several very thin coats perpendicular to the edge of the mask. Lighter shades often need a base of white, because otherwise they do not cover over dark camouflage. Take the mask off shortly after it has dried, while the finish has not fully cured, and correct any bleed with a fine brush. A final varnish evens out the sheen of the stripes with the rest of the surface.
