About product

Airspeed Oxford Mk.I Gunner Trainer 1:48 from Special Hobby

The kit renders the British twin-engine Airspeed Oxford trainer in the Mk.I version in 1:48 scale. The subtitle in the name refers to gunnery training, for which this version was equipped. In a collection it is a rewarding complement to the combat types, because no flying training system did without trainers. Check the particular contents of the package and the number of parts on the packaging.

The real subject

The Oxford was a British twin-engine trainer of largely wooden construction, which served for the advanced training of crews. On one airframe it was possible to train multi-engine flying, navigation, radio telegraphy and gunnery, so the machine became the backbone of training in the British and overseas systems and flew in many countries. The Mk.I version was fitted with a dorsal gun turret, and that is precisely what made it an aircraft for gunnery training. The silhouette, with its tall fuselage, sharply finished engine nacelles and the turret above the rear, is unmistakable.

Building and painting tips

The Oxford's glazing covers a large area, so it pays to finish and varnish the interior before closing the fuselage up. Deal with the frames of the glazing with a pre-cut mask or with narrow strips of tape; lining them by hand is tedious with so many windows. Check the engine nacelles and their joint to the wing dry and fill any gap with thin filler, so the engraving is not lost. Spray the paint over a primer in several thin coats, and with training schemes count on bold panels, which are better masked than painted with a brush. Varnish the area to a gloss under the decals and unify the finished model with a matte or semi-matte varnish.

Who the model is for

  • Collectors of British aviation of the Second World War period
  • Modelers who want trainers in the display case too, not only combat machines
  • Builders with experience of glazing and masking
  • Anyone interested in twin-engine aircraft in 1:48 scale

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

The Mk.I version was fitted with a dorsal gun turret and also served for gunnery training. The versions without a turret were used mainly for training in flying and navigation.

Check the contents of the package on the packaging. Masks for this type are also available separately.

The simplest way is to paint the interior and the frame of the glazing before closing the fuselage up, and then to mask the frames with strips of tape or a ready-made mask. Glue the clear parts with a glue that will not fog them.

Given the extent of the glazing and the need to finish the interior in advance, we recommend the model rather to a modeler who already has several kits behind them.
