A kit of the German single-engine biplane in the early production form of the A-1 version. Behind the GasPatch models brand stands a Greek manufacturer that made its name with exceptionally fine detail on small parts; this kit too belongs rather in the hands of a more experienced modeler than a beginner. A biplane is a rewarding subject for a display case, as it has a characteristic silhouette and in 1:48 scale takes up little room.
The Henschel Hs 123 was a single-seat biplane with fixed spatted landing gear and a radial engine, which arose in the middle of the 1930s as a dive bomber. Although it was to be replaced quickly by more modern all-metal monoplanes, it stayed in service considerably longer, because it proved itself in the role of a direct support aircraft from improvised field surfaces; it was simple, resistant and undemanding in maintenance. The early machines of the A-1 version differ from the later ones in details of the cowling, the equipment and the exhaust system, so which form you build is substantial for a modeler.
With a biplane the geometry decides the result. Glue the lower wing and the struts on a flat surface and set the upper wing in a simple jig or between two supports of the same height, so that both the dihedral and the gap come out symmetrical. Dose the glue a drop at a time and let the joints cure properly before you move on. Rig the bracing wires only on a nearly finished model, best from an elastic fiber that can be tensioned and painted over. The engine and the innards of the cowling pay off being painted before it is closed up, as they are visible through the openings. Paint the spatted landing gear separately and fit it at the end, as it is then considerably easier to mask. The cockpit is open and clearly visible, so it is worth investing time in it.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
