The 1:48 Ammo Box Cal. .30 M1 set is a modeling accessory, not a kit. It is a miniature of the American sheet-metal ammunition box designated M1, intended for .30 caliber ammunition, in 1:48 scale. It is added to a finished vehicle model, to a figure or into a diorama scene, where it fills a vehicle bed, a machine-gun position or the area around a weapon.
The M1 box is the classic American sheet-metal container for a .30 caliber belt, that is for the 7.62x63 mm cartridge known commercially as the .30-06. It served to carry and feed ammunition for the Browning M1917 and M1919 machine guns, and in practically unchanged form the American army used it from the Second World War and long afterwards. A folding handle and a latched lid made it possible to carry it by hand as well as to clip it to a mount, so it appears in infantry gear, on vehicles and at firing positions. Watch out for confusion with the larger box for the .50 caliber, which has different dimensions and a different shape.
Separate the part with a sharp scalpel, sand the residue from production back and degrease the surface. The boxes were painted in a uniform olive shade with simple lettering, so the work with shades does the most: a base, slightly lightened centers of the panels, a darker wash into the corners and the rims of the lid, and finally fine scuffs on the edges. The folding handle is a rewarding spot for a metallic highlight. In a diorama it works well to stack the boxes irregularly, some open and some closed.
The set is supplied unpainted. Paints, glue and the base model are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
