Masks for the glazing of the Martin B-26 medium bomber in the B and G versions, 1:48 scale. The covering is prepared for the outer and the inner sides and the shapes come from the kit by the brand Revell.
Responsibility details are not available.
The machine with the cigar-shaped fuselage and the short wing had a high wing loading for its day, so it forgave little and landed fast. Crews in training therefore invented unflattering nicknames for it and there was talk of widows. Once the pilots learned to handle it, though, it turned out to be an exceptionally durable aircraft: in European operations it ended up with the lowest loss rate of all the American bombers. The version with the letter B received a greater span and stronger defensive armament, while the late G had the wing incidence slightly increased.
The glazing here is extensive. Besides the canopy over the two pilots, the whole tip of the fuselage is glazed, where the bombardier had his place, and side windows and vision ports are added to that. Masking such a number of areas by hand swallows more time than assembling and sanding the whole airframe.
The package deals with the outer as well as the inner sides of the glazing. On a glazed nose that pays off twice over, because it can be seen through and uncolored frames from inside would spoil the whole impression. The outlines follow the parts of the chosen model with no need for adjustment.
On large panes it helps to lay a piece on by one edge first, press that edge down and only then lay the rest away from it. That avoids the air bubbles that form under the film when a whole area is laid down at once. Smaller vision ports, by contrast, take being laid on in one movement; it is only good to check them against the light straight away.
