The real subject

The Bell P-39 Airacobra was an odd sight among the fighters of the Second World War. Its engine sits behind the pilot's back, the drive shaft passes forward under the floor of the cockpit to the propeller and a cannon fires through the propeller hub. The aircraft rests on a nose wheel and the cockpit is entered by automobile-style side doors with windows, not by sliding the canopy back. The cockpit is consequently visible from both sides on a finished model and it is worth putting work into it. The N version is among the later production forms of the aircraft.

What the set contains

This is a decal set, that is elements that are applied to the surface of the model rather than glued on like plastic parts. The extent of the set and the recommended order of work are described in the manufacturer's instructions, which you should read before you start.

Building and painting tips

The elements are lifted off the sheet once the backing paper has been dampened: with a damp sponge and a drop of dish soap, wet the paper under the part, lift the element with tweezers and transfer it to its place. They hold on PVA glue (white glue); the maker does not recommend super glue, and decal softener does not belong on them, because it attacks the printed layer. Prepare the base smooth and degreased; matte grainy paint holds badly under an element and the edges then stand out. Fit and check the interior before you glue the fuselage halves to each other. During the build it is better to leave the side doors open, or no one will see your work.
