The C-130 Hercules is a four-engine turboprop transport aircraft with a high-set wing and a cargo ramp at the rear. It is built for rough work: it will carry freight as well as people, it will land on a short, unprepared surface and it will stay serviceable far from large airports. That is exactly why it has been flying all over the world for decades and has become the yardstick against which other transport machines are measured.
Fat Albert is a Hercules that accompanies the American Blue Angels display team. Between appearances it carries equipment, spare parts and the ground personnel without whom the team would not move from the spot, and at air shows it performs itself before the main program. It carries the colors of the team, so a large transport aircraft is painted as richly as the fighters it accompanies. Among models of transport hardware it is instantly recognizable because of that.
Before the markings come next in line, it pays to have the surface genuinely finished: the transitions between shades sanded, the finish dry and the dust brushed off. Rich shades cover better on a light base, so a primer is laid under them and they are sprayed in several thin coats, so that the edges stay sharp and the surface even. A large model is also painted in sections, as otherwise the underside of the wing is hard to reach. Look for the exact placing of the individual elements and the recommended shades in the manufacturer's instructions.
For modelers who build transport hardware and want a machine in the display case that differs from the ordinary military finish at first sight. Paints and clear coat are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
