A set of self-adhesive masks for spraying the glazing and the framing of the Dornier Do 217J-1/2 model in 1:48 scale. It is not a kit or a finished model but an accessory that replaces the laborious trimming of masking tape. The masks are cut to the shape of the particular plastic part, so they seat on the canopy frames and make it possible to spray sharp, evenly wide edges. The double-sided designation means that the sheet contains parts for the outer and the inner side of the glazing: the inside of the frames can be sprayed in the interior shade and the outside then in the covering color. The masks are cut for the ICM kit.
Degrease the clear part first and let it dry completely. Take the individual masks out of the sheet with the tip of a scalpel or with tweezers, lay them on the frame and press them down with a wooden toothpick so that the edge does not stand away anywhere. Where a mask overhangs the edge of the part, trim it with a fresh blade exactly along the outline. Cover the surrounding areas with tape or liquid mask. Lay the paint on in several thin coats and let it flash off in between; a heavy coat will run under the edge of the mask. Lift the mask as soon as the paint is dry to the touch; if you wait too long, the finish chips at the edge. With a double-sided set it pays to spray the inner side in the interior shade first and only then the outer frames.
The Dornier Do 217 was a German twin-engine bomber of the Second World War period. The J version came about through conversion into a heavy night fighter; it had a modified nose with fixed gun armament and a smaller crew. The J-1 subversion served for night attacks and the J-2 carried onboard radar. The cockpit glazing on this type is broken up and the frames are difficult to mask by hand, which is why pre-cut masks are a noticeable saving of time on a large twin-engine model.
The mask is an accessory, not a kit. The model, paints, glue and thinners are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
