Pre-cut self-adhesive painting masks in 1:48 scale from Art Scale. These are not a kit or spare parts but an aid for painting. You stick the masks onto the clear parts, they cover the transparent areas and leave only the cockpit framing exposed. On the two-seat version the glazing is considerably longer and has more dividing frames than on a single-seat aircraft, so hand masking is tedious here. The double-sided version allows for masking from the outside and from the inside, so you paint the frame from inside as well. The set is cut to the shape of the parts of the Great Wall Hobby kit, so with another kit check the fit dry.
The Su-27UB is the two-seat combat trainer version of the Su-27 heavy fighter. The second station is set higher behind the pilot so that the instructor has a view forward, which called for a raised fuselage spine and enlarged vertical tail surfaces to maintain stability. The airframe otherwise remained identical to the single-seat version: the continuous line of the fuselage and wing, two engines in separate nacelles and a forward section with a large cockpit canopy. Besides training, the machine also served as a full combat aircraft.
Wash the clear parts in lukewarm water with detergent and let them dry. Pop the masks out of the sheet with the tip of a scalpel and pick them up with tweezers, not with your fingers. Stick the inner masks on before you fit the canopy to the fuselage. Mask the long two-seat canopy gradually from one end: press the mask from the center toward the edges and smooth the edge down with a toothpick. Where the shape does not sit precisely on a curve, trim the outline with a fresh blade right on the part. Spray the framing in thin coats at right angles to the surface, first the interior, then the exterior shades. Lift the mask once the paint has flashed off, pulling it back at an angle over itself.
The masks are an aid for painting, not a kit or spare parts. The kit, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
