The Douglas SBD Dauntless was an American carrier dive bomber of the Second World War, a two-seat machine with clearly visible perforated dive brakes on the trailing edge of the wing. The SBD-1 version stood at the start of the series and went to the Marine Corps aviation. A model of this machine has a lot of open surfaces: the glazed cockpit with two seats, the rear defensive station and the flaps, where the thickness of the material shows at once.
A photo-etched sheet is a thin metal plate with an etched relief. You separate the parts from it, bend them to shape and glue them where injection-molded plastic cannot be thin enough: on the belts and frames of the seats, on the fittings of the cockpit, on small levers and on areas with fine texture. The result shows above all on a model with an open cockpit, where the viewer looks in. What exactly the sheet contains and in what order the parts are fitted are given in the manufacturer's instructions.
Work over a light surface and with tweezers; a part that flies off will not be found in the carpet. Separate the individual parts with a sharp blade and level the remains of the tab with a file. Make the bends over a bending tool or between two blades so that the edge comes out sharp along its whole length. Metal is joined with super glue; polystyrene cement does not work on it. Before painting, wash and degrease the sheet and use a primer, otherwise the paint flakes off the smooth metal.
