The Republic P-47D Thunderbolt was among the most massive single-engine fighters of the Second World War. It was powered by a radial engine, and the cooling went with it: air passed through the engine and left through flaps around the rear of the cowling. On the ground and while climbing, crews left them open; in flight at higher speed they closed them down, so that the cowling offered less drag. The position of the flaps therefore says something about a model.
The set in 1:48 scale replaces the engine cowling together with the cooling flaps in the closed position, and according to the name it is cut for the MiniArt kit. Closed flaps suit a model presented as a machine in flight; if you are building an aircraft standing on a stand with the cowling open, reach rather for the version with the flaps open. How many parts the package contains is given by the manufacturer in the instructions.
Cut the surplus material and the marks left by production off with a sharp blade a little way from the part and sand the surface with fine sandpaper, so as not to wipe the shape of the flaps away. Try the fit on the fuselage dry before you reach for glue; liquid cement for plastic does not hold here, so use super glue. Wash the cowling in lukewarm water with a drop of detergent before painting. The inside of the cowling tends to be darker than the outside, so the shadow between the flaps stands out even without any special shading.
It suits a modeler who is building the P-47D in 1:48 scale and wants the nose in one piece and with crisply rendered flaps. Paints, glue and tools are not part of the delivery, unless stated otherwise.
