A masking set for the American F-22 Raptor fighter in 1:48 scale. It covers the cockpit canopy from the outer and the inner side and is die-cut for the kit from Hasegawa.
Responsibility details are not available.
The US Air Force announced its advanced tactical fighter competition in the 1980s, and the winner was a design that first flew in September 1990. The production machine got into the air in 1997 and combat units took it on at the end of 2005. It combines low observability, the ability to fly at supersonic speed without afterburner, and thrust vectoring. It carries its armament inside the fuselage so as not to worsen its radar return. Production ended after just under two hundred examples and the machine was never exported.
Unlike older fighters, the Raptor has no ribs and no divided windscreen. The canopy is one piece without frames and carries a visually prominent parting line all round, where it seats on the fuselage. It is that line and its frame that get masked, and when taping by hand it easily wanders into a wavy shape. A die-cut shape removes this problem, because the outline is given in advance.
The second part of the contents is intended for the inner face. It comes into play on a model with an open cockpit, where the frame is visible from within as well. The large continuous area of the canopy can also be covered with the remainder of the film, which is more convenient than taping it over with paper tape. On this machine the covering has one more practical reason: the surface of the model is usually sprayed in a saturated gray in two close shades, and any trace of overspray on the glazing would catch the eye at once on that smooth shape.
The model of the fighter is not included. What is on sale is solely the sheet with the die-cut shapes.
