About product

The real subject

The Lockheed Martin F-22A Raptor is an American single-seat fighter with low-observable features. Its cockpit is covered by a clear canopy without a dividing frame, so you can see inside from above and from the side. On a finished model the seat and its harness therefore stay in full view, and a simplified plastic part there is more obtrusive than on aircraft with heavily framed cockpits.

What the set is for

Seat belts in a kit are usually only suggested as relief on the cushion, because injection-molded plastic cannot render a thin strap with buckles. Photo-etched metal, by contrast, is as thin as a real strap: it can be bent so that the belt drapes naturally over the edge of the seat, and the buckles can be turned into the right position. The STEEL designation means the etch is made of steel. Steel holds its shape after bending more reliably than softer metals, so the position of the strap can be adjusted even after it is in place.

  • 1:48 scale
  • photo-etched seat belts for an F-22A model
  • STEEL version, that is a steel etch
  • glued with super glue, as polystyrene cement does not hold on metal
  • fitted while building the cockpit, before the fuselage is closed up

How to work with the seat belts

The parts are held in the fret by thin tabs. Separate them with a sharp blade on a hard surface, not by twisting, and sand the remains of the tab down. Make the bends over a straight edge or shape them with flat tweezers; make sharp creases only where the strap really is folded, and choose a smooth curve everywhere else. Degrease the surfaces before gluing and apply the super glue drop by drop, so that it does not run onto visible places.

Who it is for

For modelers bothered by a flat, beltless seat in an open cockpit. The kit, paints, glue and tools are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

Photo-etched seat belts for the cockpit of an F-22A model in 1:48 scale. The kit and tools are not included.

That the etch is made of steel. Steel is stronger than softer metals, holds its shape after bending and takes fine adjustment of the strap position.

Super glue applied drop by drop. Polystyrene cement does not hold on metal. Degrease the surfaces before gluing.

While building the cockpit, before the fuselage is closed up. Once the parts are glued together the seat is out of reach.
