A texture roller is an aid, not a model and not a paint. Around its whole circumference it carries a relief pattern that is impressed into rolled-out modeling compound in a single pass. According to the name the motif is one of tentacles and organic, slightly repulsive structures in the spirit of cosmic horror — that is a pattern that suits the bases of monsters, the floors of cult shrines and surfaces where it should be obvious that something has bitten into them. The roller is intended for use many times over; the consumable is only the compound into which it is impressed.

How the roller is used

• Roll the compound out on a smooth surface to an even thickness — two-part modeling compound, polymer compound and self-hardening clay all work.
• Lightly moisten the roller and the compound or dust them with release agent, so that the pattern is not torn out.
• Go over it in one smooth pass with steady pressure and do not go back — a double impression smears the pattern.
• Cut the still soft sheet to shape with a sharp knife and only then transfer it onto the base or the groundwork board.
• Clean the roller before the compound sets; dried residue is hard to remove from fine relief.

Painting the impressed structure

Once it has cured, sand the surface only where it is necessary and spray a base coat. Organic patterns of this kind come alive with a combination of a dark wash run into the recesses and drybrushing on the raised edges; the transitions between the dark floor and the light high points make up most of the final impression.
