Injection-molded plastic kit in 1:48 scale from the premium Super Wing Series of Zoukei-Mura (a 2025 release). The box contains over 400 parts in light gray and clear plastic, a decal sheet with three schemes (aircraft from Thailand in the early 1970s and from Germany in the mid-1970s) and a sheet of masks. The equipment specific to the Weasels is there too: AGM-45 Shrike anti-radiation missiles, the AN/ALQ-87 jamming pod, a set of extra antennas and a separate rear instrument panel for the operator. Zoukei-Mura is famous for modeling even what cannot be seen in the end: the SWS Phantoms have a well-developed internal structure including the intake ducts and the J79 engines. That is enormous value, but also a considerable demand on time and patience, and this kit is not for beginners.
Wild Weasel was not a nickname but a combat specialization: finding and destroying enemy radars and surface-to-air missile batteries. Weasel crews flew by the motto First In, Last Out; they arrived over the target first to make the defenses radiate and then silence them, and they left last, once the other aircraft were safe. They carried anti-radiation missiles that home directly on a radiating radar. The F-4C Wild Weasel IV was an interim solution between the older machines and the later specialized F-4G version, and it served from the late 1960s. Remember that the F-4C has no built-in gun; that came only with the F-4E, as a lesson from Vietnam, where it turned out that missiles alone were not enough.
Allow for a longer build: the internal structure and the engines have to be painted and assembled before the fuselage is closed, otherwise you will not reach them again. Work with liquid cement for plastic and dry-fit the parts. Finish the cockpit, the landing gear bays and the intake ducts first. Before the decals, spray the model with a gloss coat and, once it has dried, unify the surface with a matte or satin one. Both the Southeast Asia camouflage and the later European scheme are best sprayed with an airbrush and soft masking.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
