A printed resin seat for the early version of the carrier fighter Grumman F4F-3 in 1:48 scale. It carries the relief of the pan and of the lightening holes, which cannot be transferred into an injection mold.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Grumman F4F-3 was the first production Wildcat, the one with which the US Navy entered the fighting in the Pacific. It differed from later versions in its fixed wings without a folding joint and in its four .50 caliber machine guns. The defenders of Wake Island flew these machines, and the first great successes of carrier fighters against Japanese aircraft are tied to their cockpits.
The accessory consists of a single part printed three-dimensionally in resin. The technology allows a thin pan, crisp rims and fine lightening in the backrest, that is, features a metal mold cannot manage. The surface is smooth, without stepped traces of layering, and the part only has to be separated carefully from the supporting grid.
The shape matches the early standard carried by machines before folding wings were introduced. Before painting, wash the seat in lukewarm water with detergent so that no print resin residue stays on it; only then will a base coat hold dependably. The material is more brittle than polystyrene, so the joint is made with cyanoacrylate glue, not with an ordinary solvent-based one.
The replacement is seated in the same place on the cockpit floor as the original plastic part. The Wildcat's pilot compartment is clearly visible through the slid-back canopy, so the care devoted to this part really does show on a finished model. The aircraft kit is sold separately.
