An add-on cockpit set for a model of the carrier-based F6F-5 Hellcat fighter in 1:48 scale. It replaces the pilot's compartment from a kit.
Responsibility details are not available.
The F6F Hellcat was a carrier-based fighter of the US Navy and the main opponent of the Japanese fighters in the closing stage of the war in the Pacific. It was powered by a massive radial engine and the machine was known for its rugged construction and the wide landing gear track that forgave hard landings on deck. The F6F-5 version was the last main production version.
The set replaces the pilot's compartment of a model in 1:48 scale. It brings shapes and surfaces that are hard to transfer into injection-molded plastic, and in this scale the cockpit under a slid-back canopy really is clearly visible. It is worth spending time on it, because this is exactly where the viewer looks first on a finished model.
The parts are not polystyrene and they are bonded with super glue. Cut the excess material off a little way from the part with a sharp blade and sand the remainder down. Wash and degrease the set before painting. Dry-fit the cockpit into both fuselage halves until they close without pressure, and sand the mating surfaces from the inside if necessary. Apply the base shade before the parts are glued together, and then comes a dark wash into the recesses and a lighter dry brush on the edges and the levers.
The set is for modelers who build the Hellcat with an open cockpit and want the interior to stand a close look. It calls for fine tools and patience when painting small parts. The kit itself, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
