A self-adhesive film with cut masks for the canopy framing of the 1:48 Grumman F9F Panther, intended for the outer and the inner side of the glazing. Shaped for the Trumpeter kit.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Panther was the first jet fighter that the US Navy sent from ship decks into the fighting of the Korean War. Its straight wing denied it the speed of swept-wing rivals, but it gave calm behavior at the moment of touchdown on a short deck and decent endurance over the target. Four 20 mm cannons concentrated in the nose also made it a usable attack machine, and tanks on the wingtips extended its radius of action without interfering with the aerodynamics. The same type also flew as the very first jet equipment of the Blue Angels display team.
The masks are cut into a thin film and follow the frames of the canopy as well as the outline of the fixed windscreen. They are applied from outside and from within, so the glazing stays clean on both sides after spraying and the framing gets a sharp edge without lengthy taping. The film takes the curve of the cockpit without its edges lifting, because it can be stretched slightly into the arch.
Once the paint has dried, the parts are lifted off with the tip of a scalpel or with tweezers and leave no adhesive residue on the clear surface. It is best to lay the paint on in several thin coats so that it does not run under the edge of the frame. Anyone building the Panther in gloss blue will appreciate that the edge of the frame needs no brush touch-up after unmasking.
