Landing gear wheels for the FM-1 Wildcat/Martlet Mk.V in 1:48 scale from Eduard replace the kit parts and bring out the unmistakable narrow landing gear of the Wildcat.
Responsibility details are not available.
An Eduard accessory for models of the license-built Wildcat in 1:48 scale. On this type the landing gear is quite literally the shop window: the narrow track and tall legs draw attention to the wheels, so replacing them with a more detailed version pays off more than on most other machines.
The Wildcat inherited its unusual arrangement of landing gear retracting into the fuselage from Grumman's prewar biplanes, and the pilot had to wind it up by hand, with roughly thirty turns of a crank in the cockpit. The FM-1 version was built under license at General Motors and the Royal Navy operated it as the Martlet Mk.V from the decks of escort carriers. There the small, tough fighters held an air umbrella over the convoys right to the end of the Battle of the Atlantic.
Seat the new wheels only on a painted model; test the contact with the landing gear leg dry and if need be adjust it with a fine file. When painting, a template or masking fluid helps at the transition between the hub and the tire. The narrow track means that any deviation in the angle of the legs shows at once, so look the model over from the front against the light. The fighter sits on the ground nose-up, so reckon on the tailwheel as the third point of support. On this type the bays in the underside of the fuselage stay clearly visible, so give them at least basic shading. Dusting with pigment will support the impression of a machine in hard service.
