The Gnome Delta nine-cylinder rotary in 1:48, cast in resin. Suitable everywhere the powerplant is visible from the outside once the model is built.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Delta fits into the development line of French rotary engines exactly where the seven-cylinder forms ran up against their ceiling. Adding two cylinders raised both the output and the smoothness of running without any need to change the basic arrangement with a fixed crank and a rotating block. Shortly afterwards the manufacturer joined with the competing firm Le Rhone and a colossus came about which during the war supplied powerplants to literally the whole of Europe and to license manufacturers across the sea. The Gnome et Rhone brand then became one of the pillars of the French aviation industry.
The early Gnome units had valve gear that sounds improbable today: the inlet valve did not sit in the head but directly in the crown of the piston, where its own inertia opened it on the downward stroke. The fuel mixture therefore flowed first through the crankcase and only from there into the working space. That reduced the number of components, but the spring of such a valve rubbed in the hottest place of the whole machine and was among the most frequent causes of failure.
Nine cylinders ran more evenly than seven, and that took away from the machine the vibration that older forms passed into the whole frame of the airframe. For that, though, the pilot bought a greater rotating mass, that is a stronger gyroscopic effect: the aircraft turned willingly to one side, and to the other it could be coaxed into a turn only with a delicate touch. Anyone who changed from a seven-cylinder to a nine-cylinder had to learn his machine almost all over again.
It is worth having everywhere the engine stays in view once the model is built: on machines without a cowling, on models with the cowling hinged open, or in dioramas where the aircraft is undergoing maintenance. Castings in this scale are tiny, so it is good to cut them off only just before fitting and to leave them on the casting block until then, where they will not get lost. Anyone who closes the engine up saves work but loses the most interesting part of the model.
