This set from Red Fox Studio belongs among three-dimensional (3D) interior decals: panels shaped in relief and pre-printed in color on decal paper, applied straight onto the plastic parts of the cockpit. They replace both flat instrument panel decals and the slow business of painting tiny dials and lettering. It is not a kit of the aircraft but an accessory. Because the same maker has several identically named sets for the same type in 1:48 scale, differing only in the target kit, note expressly: this one is cut for Hasegawa kits.
The Grumman F-14A Tomcat is a carrier fighter with a variable-geometry wing and a crew of two in tandem, a pilot and a weapons systems officer. The two stations have entirely different equipment, so the cockpit is one of the most broken-up places on a model. Under the large canopy it is also well on show, and with a model displayed with the cockpit open the detail pays off.
Seat the panels before you glue the fuselage halves together, while the cockpit is still accessible, and onto a smooth degreased surface with the surroundings painted beforehand. Three-dimensional decals behave differently from classic wet decals, so go by the instructions enclosed in the package. Let everything dry before you close the canopy and try the parts dry first, so that the panels sit the right way round in the front and rear stations.
