A set of machine-cut self-adhesive masks in 1:48 scale for models of the Grumman F-14 Tomcat carrier fighter, covering the A, B and D versions. It is not a kit — it is an accessory that comes into its own only at the painting stage of a model under construction. The vinyl film is pliable, holds even on a bulged canopy and leaves no adhesive behind when removed. Furball Aero-Design is an American maker of accessories focused on the aircraft of the US Navy.
The Tomcat was a two-seat carrier fighter with a variable-geometry wing. The sweep of the wing adjusted automatically to speed in flight, so the machine managed both a slow approach to a carrier deck and flight at high speed. The F-14A version used the original powerplants, and the later F-14B and F-14D received more modern engines and gradually digital avionics as well. A typical feature is the large two-seat cockpit canopy with a view in practically every direction — and it is that which gives the most work when painting.
The masks are lifted with tweezers straight from the sheet; no knife is needed to cut them out. Degrease the glazing first with alcohol and let it dry completely. Press the edge of an applied mask down with a wooden toothpick so that paint does not run under it. Spray the inner sides of the frames with the cockpit interior shade first, and only then with the outer finish color. Spray thinly and in several coats — a heavy coat will build a visible step at the edge. Take the mask off when the paint has set, pulling it back over itself at an angle, not straight up.
This is an add-on set for a kit you already own. The model, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
