A resin set of undercarriage bays from Aires Hobby Models for a plastic kit of the Harrier in the GR.1 and GR.3 versions in 1:48 scale. It replaces the space into which the undercarriage retracts and brings structural detail there that injection-molded plastic manages only in rough outline: hinted ribs, pipe runs and bay walls with crisp edges. The set is not a standalone model; it needs a base kit.
The Hawker Siddeley Harrier GR.1 and its later development the GR.3 were British combat aircraft with vertical and short takeoff, powered by a single engine with vectored thrust. Because of that arrangement the Harrier has an untypical undercarriage layout, where the main load is carried on the centerline of the fuselage and the outrigger legs are placed at the wingtips. The undercarriage bays are therefore interesting structurally and are clearly visible from below on a finished model.
Wash the parts in warm water with detergent, so that the release agent from the mold is removed. Cut the casting blocks off with a saw or a cutting disc, and sand wet and with respiratory protection. It is glued with cyanoacrylate. The bays are painted and weathered before the fuselage is closed, because afterward you will no longer reach them. Work from the primer through a light base interior shade to a thin wash that brings out the recesses, and to a careful dry brush on the edges of the ribs. Try the fit dry; with resin bays the sides are commonly sanded back so that the fuselage or wing halves seat without a gap.
This is an accessory, not a kit of an aircraft. The base model, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise. Please make sure beforehand that the set matches the kit you want to build.
