Cut masks for the outside of the cockpit glazing of the anti-tank Hs 129 B2 in 1:48 scale, prepared for the parts of the Hasegawa kit.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Henschel Hs 129 ground-attack aircraft was given the task of destroying tanks and its construction matched that. The pilot sat in an armored tub with a windscreen 75 mm thick, the space was so narrow that some of the instruments had to be moved outside onto the engine nacelles, and the gunsight stuck out in front of the cockpit in the open. The B2 version carried heavy gun armament under the fuselage and fought mainly on the Eastern Front. Engines of French origin were weak and the machine had a reputation for poor performance, yet in the role of a tank destroyer it proved itself.
The glazing is masked as one of the last steps before painting. The cockpit has to be finished, the canopy fitted and glued, the seams filled and sanded. Only then are the cutouts laid on the frames and the areas that are to stay clear. The primer follows, which at the same time reveals whether paint is bleeding anywhere, and after it the camouflage. It is best to press the small frames down once more with a wooden stick before spraying.
The masks stay in place throughout the painting, through the gloss varnish, the decals and the final matte overcoat. They are taken off at the very end, with the tip of a scalpel lifting a corner and the film pulled away at a slant. If a thin line of paint does seep under the edge, it is scraped off with a toothpick dipped in thinner. The frames then come out in the camouflage shade and the glass stays clean.
Film with a ready cut for the outer surfaces of the canopy. The inside, the model and paints are not in the shipment.
