About product

Junkers W 34 — propeller 1:48 (Metallic Details)

A small resin set from Metallic Details in 1:48 scale. It replaces the propeller on a model of the single-engine Junkers W 34. The propeller is the part where the quality of the mold shows most: injection-molded plastic usually has thick blades with a blunt leading edge, while a resin casting can manage a thinner section and a more accurate blade twist. This is not an aircraft model, but a replacement part for a kit.

The real subject

The Junkers W 34 is a single-engine high-wing monoplane of mixed use from the second half of the 1920s, built in the typical Junkers style with corrugated duralumin skin. It began as a transport and liaison aircraft and in many countries served for decades as a trainer and utility machine as well. The powerplant and the shape of the propeller varied with the version, the later ones using a nine-cylinder radial engine. On this design the propeller is clearly visible from the front and from the side, and its shape strongly affects the silhouette of the whole model.

Building and painting tips

First wash the casting in warm water with detergent and remove the mold release agent. Cut the casting block off with a fine saw as close to the part as possible and sand the remainder away; on a propeller work carefully so as not to shorten or warp a blade. Sand wet and with respiratory protection. It is glued with cyanoacrylate glue, and because the propeller is usually the only joint on a thin shaft, the gel version pays off along with a moment to align it exactly. Apply a primer before painting. The blades are most often sprayed a dark shade with the warning tips picked out and the hub in a metal finish; a final light rub of the leading edges with a dry brush will bring the propeller to life.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of the Junkers W 34 in 1:48 scale
  • Modelers who are not satisfied with the thick injection-molded propeller from the kit
  • Anyone interested in interwar transport and utility aircraft
  • Modelers looking for a quick way to lift the finished impression

This is a detail accessory, not a standalone model. The set is supplied unassembled and unpainted; the kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

The Junkers W 34 exists as a kit in 1:48 scale, but it is worth dry-fitting the mounting shaft before gluing.

Check the number of pieces on the box.

An injection mold cannot make blades thin and twisted enough. A resin casting is truer in shape and on the model it shows at once from the front.

Use gel cyanoacrylate glue, degrease the surfaces first and dry-fit the part so that you can check that it sits square to the engine axis.
