About product

The real subject

The Kawasaki Ki-61 Hien differed from most Japanese fighters of its time in its powerplant: instead of a radial engine it received a liquid-cooled inverted V12, which gave it a slim fuselage recalling European designs. The Allies used the code name Tony for it. The designation Ki-61-I belongs to the first production series.

What the set contains

Three-dimensional color elements for the cockpit in 1:48 scale, carried on decal paper. The elements have a raised relief and a finished color print including legible instruments, so there is no painting of tiny dial faces and captions with a brush.

How to apply the elements

The elements of the QD range are applied like a decal. The part is cut from the sheet, dipped in lukewarm water for about fifteen seconds and slid off the decal paper into place; do not use a decal softener or a decal fixer, because the chemistry would attack the printed resin. The element has no adhesive layer of its own, so first paint the surface in the base interior shade, let it dry and give it a gloss coat of the Future, Klear or Tamiya X-22 type. Move the dipped element with tweezers or the tip of a knife, seat it in place and press it gently with a soft cotton swab from the center toward the edges. While it is still damp it can be shaped into the edges and recesses of the cockpit side walls; on complex spots a drop of super glue helps.

Who it is for

The set is aimed at modelers who want a well worked and legible cockpit under an open canopy but do not want to spend hours painting the instrument panel. The elements are shaped for a particular kit, so check that they match your model. The kit, paints and glue are not included, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

Yes. The part is dipped in lukewarm water for about fifteen seconds and slid off the decal paper into place, where a gloss coat holds it.

It is not, and it must not be used, because the chemistry would attack the printed resin. While the element is still damp it can be worked into edges and recesses by pressing it with a soft cotton swab.

Yes, it is worth doing. Paint the surface in the base interior shade, let it dry and give it a gloss coat so that the element takes hold.
