An injection-molded plastic kit in 1:48 scale issued by Hobby 2000. Hobby 2000 does not make its own molds - this box holds Academy plastic parts, to which the publisher has added Cartograf decals and masks for the glazing. The quality of the plastic therefore comes from the original mold, while the added value of this boxing lies in the decals and the masks. The decals offer two markings - a machine of the 497th Tactical Fighter Squadron nicknamed Terrible Tyke and the Phantom with fuselage number 66-7463 of the 555th Tactical Fighter Squadron, flown by Richard S. Ritchie and Charles B. DeBellevue, the most successful American airmen of Vietnam. That is what this boxing is about: these are not random machines but the aircraft of aces.
The F-4 Phantom II was one of the most widespread combat aircraft of the Cold War - two-seat, twin-engine, with the characteristic dihedral of the wing tips and drooping horizontal tail surfaces. The F-4D version was a US Air Force fighter and had no built-in gun. Designers of the 1960s believed that missile armament would replace the gun; over Vietnam it turned out that this was not enough in close-in maneuvering combat. That experience led to the later F-4E version receiving a gun built into the nose. Even so, it was on the F-4D that American pilots and weapon systems operators scored a number of kills - and the machines in this boxing were among them.
Build with thin cement for plastic, which is drawn into the seam by capillary action. Finish and paint the cockpit and the landing gear bays before you close the fuselage. Spray the model with a gloss coat before the decals - on a smooth base the decals do not silver; once dry, go over them with a matte or semi-gloss coat. The masks supplied speed up the canopy glazing markedly. The typical Southeast Asia camouflage (three upper shades and a light belly) calls for careful boundaries between the colors - an airbrush and soft masking suit it well.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
