A resin kit of the MD-3 ground power unit in 1:48 scale from the CMK brand. It is not a model of an aircraft or of a combat vehicle but a piece of airfield ground equipment, built on its own and serving as an accessory to a scene around an aircraft. It is exactly such small things that turn a lone aircraft model into a believable airfield or deck scene. The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted, and working with resin differs from working with plastic.
A ground power unit, or GPU for short, is a mobile unit that supplies an aircraft with electrical power at a moment when its own engines are not running. Without it the onboard electronics cannot be switched on, the systems cannot be checked and the machine cannot be prepared for flight. The designation MD-3 belongs to a family of American airfield trolleys and tractors that appeared beside aircraft both at shore bases and on decks. Their characteristic features are compact dimensions, a low build and a simple frame, so that the unit can be moved comfortably between parked machines.
Wash the resin parts in soapy water, so that the mold release agent from the mold disappears and the paint holds. Cut the casting blocks off with a saw, not with nippers. Sand wet and protect your airways. It is glued with cyanoacrylate glue (super glue). Lay down a primer before painting. Airfield equipment tends to be markedly worn, so chipped paint on the edges, oil stains, dirty wheels and fine dust on the underside all pay off. Lettering and warning stripes can be suggested with masking. The trolley looks good on a piece of concrete apron beside a model of an aircraft, where it serves as a yardstick for size.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted as a resin kit. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
