Quickboost 1:48 Mil Mi-24 – resin wipers

This item is not a model but a detail set — a set of resin wipers for a model of the Soviet Mil Mi-24 attack helicopter in 1:48 scale. It is made by Quickboost, a brand of the Czech company Aires, which specializes in small castings that replace coarser plastic parts from kits. The Mi-24 kit itself has to be bought separately.

What the accessory is for

The Mi-24 has the characteristic stepped glazing of the pilot and weapon systems operator cockpits — and that is exactly where the wipers are clearly visible. In this scale injection-molded plastic is often too thick, or the wipers are not on the model at all. A resin casting allows a much thinner and sharper profile of the arm, so once it is painted and glued onto the glazing the front of the fuselage looks markedly more faithful. It is a small change with a disproportionately large effect — it belongs to the same category of improvement as fine antennas, steps or a pitot tube.

Recommended procedure with resin

• Wash the parts in lukewarm water with detergent and let them dry through — this removes the mold release agent, on which paint would not hold.
• Separate them from the casting block with a fine saw or a cutting disc; do not break them off, resin cracks.
• Sand the rest of the block and the flash down with respiratory protection — resin dust irritates the lungs, and wet sanding with a respirator is ideal.
• Bond with super glue (cyanoacrylate); ordinary cement for plastic will not bond resin.
• Apply a primer, paint them after the pattern on the real machine and fit the wipers at the very end of the build so that they do not break off.
