A wheels set for the P-38J Lightning in 1:48 scale from the Czech manufacturer Eduard is a resin accessory that replaces the wheels from the plastic kit with a more accurate casting.

Note that this is not an airplane model. It is a replacement part, an accessory meant to take the place of the main landing gear wheels in a P-38J kit in 1:48 scale. It is made by Eduard, the Czech brand from Obrnice near Most, in its range of resin and printed accessories. The casting captures the tread of the tire and the tracery of the hub more sharply than a split plastic mold can, and above all it does away with the seam in the middle of the tread that has to be laboriously sanded away on two-piece plastic wheels.
Wash the parts in lukewarm water with detergent and let them dry. Cut the casting block off with a saw or a cutting disc and level the surface with abrasive paper laid on a flat base, so that the wheel then stands square and the model does not rock on its landing gear. They are bonded with super glue; cement for plastic has no effect on resin. Before fitting, check the diameter of the pin on the gear leg, as a resin hub tends to be drilled a little tight and only needs opening up with a pin vise.
A wheel is made up of two different areas that you want to separate sharply. The simplest way is to spray the whole wheel in the tire shade, let it dry thoroughly and only then mask the tread, either with a circular mask cut with a compass cutter or with tape laid around the circumference and its edge pressed down carefully. Then spray the hub and take the mask off as soon as the paint is dry to the touch. The opposite order, masking the hub, is more laborious and the edge tends to be ragged. Rubber should not be coal black; a dark gray tone looks more convincing in scale. Finally a light dusting of pigment around the circumference comes in handy, so that the wheel does not look as if it had just come off the production line.
This is an accessory, not a kit. The model, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise. Protect your airways when sanding resin and work wet.
