The P-51B and the P-51C are versions of the American fighter aircraft Mustang that received the British Merlin engine built under license in the United States. The liquid-cooled V12 from the Mustang made a fighter able to escort bomber formations deep over enemy territory. From the later D version both are recognizable at first glance: they have the spine of the fuselage drawn back as far as the fin and a canopy divided by a frame. The pilot sits in them in a fairly confined space, and it is precisely for that reason that on these machines the seat is clearly visible with the canopy slid back.
The pilot's seat in 1:48 scale as a replacement for the part from the kit. The shell seat was shaped for the seat parachute the pilot sat on, so it has a deep pan and a high backrest. The extent of the parts, that is, whether the set also contains the frame and the belts, is given in the maker's instructions.
The parts are not of polystyrene and ordinary cement for plastic has no effect on them; use cyanoacrylate glue. Cut excess material away with a sharp blade a little from the part and sand the remainder down carefully, so that the shape of the shell is preserved. Wash and degrease the part before painting. Seat the seat dry before the fuselage is glued together and check that it sits on the axis and at the correct height relative to the instrument panel and the walls of the cockpit. It pays to paint it before fitting, when you can reach the part from every side: choose the shade of the interior according to the documentation for the particular machine, the seat belts suit a muted sand tone and the metal buckles fine accentuation. A weak wash into the hollows and light accentuation of the edges will make the focus of the whole cockpit out of a small part.
For modelers who build a Mustang with the canopy slid back and want a cockpit at a level of detail a kit does not offer. The model, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
