Templates for the glazing of the 1:48 P-51D Mustang. They cover the windscreen and the sliding teardrop canopy from both sides and are matched to the Tamiya kit.

The best-known form of the Mustang came about when the designers cut away the rear part of the fuselage behind the pilot and replaced it with a molded teardrop of Plexiglas. The pilot could suddenly see behind him over his shoulder, which in a fighter fight decided things sooner than engine power. Behind the cut-down spine, though, there was less side area and the aircraft began to be unstable in a hard turn, so an extended dorsal fin was added at the base of the tail.
With a Packard V-1650 and drop tanks this version could reach Berlin from England and back. That was the moment when daylight raids stopped being an operation by bombers alone and became a fighter battle along the whole route. The six 12.7 mm machine guns in the wing were given a better angle for the ammunition belts than on the older versions, so they stopped jamming so often.
The teardrop itself has minimal framing, but the windscreen is made up of a flat bulletproof pane and two canted side panels that meet at an acute angle. It is exactly there that tape will not seat and paint bleeds. A cut part follows that corner precisely and holds it even after a mist of clear varnish.
The set is drawn to the parts from the Tamiya mold. On another manufacturer's kit the curvature of the teardrop tends to differ and the template then creates folds at the top of the arc, which show under paint as an uneven frame edge.
