The North American P-51D was the most widespread version of the Mustang fighter, recognizable at first glance by its bubble canopy and lowered rear fuselage. The D-5 designation belongs to an early production batch of this version. The main wheels of Mustangs came in several tread patterns, which is why modelers often change them to match a particular machine in a photograph.
The set brings replacement main wheels with an oval tread pattern as an alternative to the parts from the kit. A replacement wheel offers crisper detail on the tire and the hub than a split plastic part does. The enclosed manufacturer's instructions describe the exact extent of the package.
The parts are not polystyrene, and ordinary cement for plastic will not join them. Use super glue and apply it in small amounts. Cut the excess material away with a sharp blade a little way from the part, sand the remainder and level the face on which the wheel sits against the landing gear leg. Before painting, wash the wheels in lukewarm water with detergent and let them dry. In painting it works well to spray the whole wheel in the tire color first and add the hub with a brush or through a mask, which keeps the edge between hub and tire clean.
The set suits anyone who wants faithful wheels on a Mustang with no seams to sand and with a matching tread. The model, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
