A smaller scale changes the task. Whereas on a large model the individual blotches are distinct shapes, here they are small dots, with which the thickness of the applied paint decides more than the precision of placement. The set is a camouflage one all the same; the whole surface of the vehicle is wrapped in it.
Toward the end of the war German factories moved to a scheme whose purpose was to imitate light shining through broadleaf cover. Extensive color areas were applied to the vehicle and at their boundaries small dots of a contrasting color were added, reaching across from one area into the other. The eye thus lost its point of reference and the boundaries of the areas were blurred. This variant works with dots of unequal diameter; the sister version uses dots of a uniform size and comes across more regularly.
In 1:48 it is advisable to lower both the pressure and the amount of paint and to spray from a greater distance, because a heavy layer would merge the small dots into a single blotch. At the same time the stencil tends to be small enough to be laid in one piece and need not be divided into sections, which speeds the whole job up. Take it off with a slanting pull across the edge, not straight up, as otherwise the paint around it will lift with it.
The product is masking material for painting a finished surface.
