This is a diorama accessory, that is, scenery for a scene in 1:48 scale, not a model of a vehicle or an aircraft. Crates are among the most universal props of all: they suit civilian and military views alike, the interior of a store, a ramp, a workshop and the bed of a truck. The accessory is made by the Czech brand Hauler, focused on photo-etched and resin accessories and on diorama elements.
An empty floor or a smooth truck bed looks dead in a diorama. Small objects give a scene scale and a story: from the way the crates are stacked you can tell whether loading or clearing is going on, or whether they have been lying there for weeks. The stackable shape moreover lets you build them into columns of different heights, which easily fills out empty corners and breaks a straight line. Because this is a modern, commonly used type of packaging, it comes into its own as well in present-day scenes as in workshop and store corners.
First clean the parts up, wash resin castings in lukewarm water with detergent so that the mold release agent disappears from the surface, and apply a thin primer. In the scale, plastic is well built up on a saturated, slightly muted shade; a pure signal color looks unnatural, because real crates fade in the sun. So divide the color into two or three shades of the same family, so that the heap does not look like one casting. Bring the edges out by drybrushing in a lighter tone, and a dark wash will lighten the hollows and the latticed bottoms. Finally add fine dust with a pigment, mainly where a crate stands on the ground. Always settle the accessories into the base rather than merely standing them on it, and mask any gap with paste or grass.
The accessory is supplied unpainted. Paints, glue and a base are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
