Burgundy Wine Red – a wine red for shadows

Burgundy Wine Red is a bottled acrylic paint of the dense Artistic Dense line. It is thinned with water or an acrylic thinner, not with a lacquer one — an acrylic, an oil, a spray and a weathering effect of the same shade are four different kinds of product in the range, and mixing them up means destroying the work already done. The shade is a dark wine: a red drawn toward brown and violet, several steps deeper than pure carmine.

Where the shade belongs

This is above all a shadow color. The cleanest way to get depth into red cloth is not to mix black into it but to lay a darker related red down — and that is exactly what the wine red does. It finds a use at the bottom of the folds of cloaks and skirts, on dark leather, belts and scabbards, on wine-red upholstery and on fantasy clothing. On its own it also works as a full color for dark cloth, for which the highlights are then built by adding a warmer red. Over a dark base the tone holds better than light reds do, which makes it a comfortable first layer.

How to work with it

• Build the transitions in steps: wine red as the shadow, carmine as the middle tone, a warm red as the highlight — three steps are enough for a convincing fold.
• Thinned into a glaze it suits deliberate darkening of an already finished red area.
• Let every layer dry; wet dense acrylic tears away under the next stroke and the area stays patchy.
• Mixing with brown gives leather tones, with violet a deeper shadow, and with white the tone quickly turns gray — use white sparingly.
