A set of photo-etched fenders for the model of the German Pz.Kpfw. III Ausf. L medium tank in 1:48 scale. It is not a kit of the vehicle but a replacement for the parts where the limits of injection-molded plastic show up most. The parts are cut for the Tamiya kit.
The Pz.Kpfw. III Ausf. L was one of the later versions of the German medium tank, armed with a 5 cm gun with a lengthened barrel and fitted with additional frontal armor. The same chassis also served as the basis of the StuG III assault gun, so accessories for the two machines often sit side by side in one range.
Fenders are a thin folded sheet on small brackets. The plastic version has an edge that on the real vehicle would correspond to armor, and that shows from every angle. The metal replacement has the correct thickness and, above all, it can be shaped. A bent corner, a missing piece or a buckled front section are the rule on a tank that moved across country, and that gives a model a credibility no weathering can replace.
Glue the long parts in sections and keep checking that the fender holds a straight line along the hull. Make the lengthwise bends in advance and the deformations last. Cut the original plastic fenders off only after a dry run of the new set. Degrease the metal with alcohol before painting and spray it with primer, or the paint will flake off the edges. In the weathering work with the fact that the fender is the dirtiest part of the vehicle: a build-up of mud from below, dust from above and wear through to bare metal on the edges where the crew moved most.
The set is supplied unassembled and unpainted; it is an accessory for a model. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package.
